The Great Gatsby 1974 Costumes

When one watches “The Great Gatsby”, one can’t help but to focus on the amazing look that Costume Designer Theoni V. Aldredge gave to the film. The costumes helped bring to life so vividly the characters of Gatsby and Daisy, played by Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.


“The Great Gatsby” brought Theoni the Academy Award for best Costume Design in 1975, and Gatsby’s costumes were adapted by numerous Fashion Houses including Bloomingdale’s.

Originally from Greece, Theoni V. Aldredge, died on Friday in Connecticut .  Her career started in the 50′s , and her costume designs influenced and became main street fashions worn by many men and women during the 70′s.
Theoni’s body of work is vast, and included three Tony Awards  for Broadway’s musicals, ” Barnum” ,”La Cage aux Folles”, “Annie”.  Her film credits include :”Moonstruck”, “Annie”, “Ghostbusters”, “The First Wives Club”, and ‘Laura Mars”.

Theoni was married to actor Tom Aldredge, appearing now  in HBO “Boardwalk Empire”.
